The statistics continue to rise for Mental Health (MH) and Substance Abuse (SA) agencies jointly referred to as Behavioral Health (BH). The substantial growth in the elderly population has greatly impacted The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). As the rate of Medicare Enrollees' increase, the problems, complications and issues also intensify.
In an effort to narrow the gap, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have entered into a joint venture. A solution to simplify and expedite business operations and medical outcomes was necessary. A process in which to link both Federal and State behavioral health records, seemed ideal. Procedures and tools to improve all aspects of business operations and build systems that interoperate with each other and with the Medicaid system. The endeavor created is known as the Medicaid Information Technology Architecture or MITA. Behavioral Health MITA (BH-MITA) is the division designated to handle behavior health matters
The Behavioral Health MITA enterprise is part of a State, and national behavioral health care organization. Shared providers, consumers, protocols, data standards, and health improvement objectives are used. Utilizing electronic health records, the Behavioral Health MITA system promotes health information technology. The data is configured, shared, analyzed and evaluated. It is easily accessible in real-time to the health plans and providers. The efficiency and effectiveness produced by this project is making a difference. Behavioral health MITA provides the opportunity for greater cooperation, and interoperability among all.
From all angles, Behavioral Health MITA results are positive. Improved data availability, streamlined functions and enhanced communication. Reduced manual activity, better analyses, comparability, and outcome measures have been demonstrated. Structured and more efficient care, treatment, recovery, regulatory, and reporting processes. The reduction of human intervention and errors has also been improved. Client involvement and support has increased. Consumer satisfaction and knowledge is raised. Quicker and more effective policies and practices, based on real-time knowledge have reflected positively. All of these changes have impacted the success that might have otherwise been achieved.
The Behavioral Health MITA project currently serves to integrate all behavioral health systems. However, it may also be the answer to a broader, more long-term solution. The Behavioral Health MITA model could be used universally for all healthcare needs. An IT network capable of bringing all public-sector health, wellness, and support programs under a single umbrella. The Behavior Health-MITA has the potential to lead to an interoperable system that could support the coordination of care across the entire health spectrum.
