Tips on Coin Collecting and Investing: Valuable Coins Still in Circulation

By Jordan Miller

Many coins worth money are still currently in circulation, and some of these may be very valuable. Most people do not look at the change received, and many turn around and spend these coins without ever truly examining them. This can be a very costly mistake. Most people assume that any valuable coins worth collecting have already been taken out of circulation but this is not always the case. Some highly desired coins were minted in the last 10-20 years, and these may still be circulating through the financial systems and consumers.

You should always carefully check your change before you spend it. You could have coins worth tens or hundreds of dollars and not even know it. If you own a business, you could be taking coins in daily that are worth more than their face value. You could be passing along these coins to customers without even knowing it and you could be losing money this way.

Many rare and valuable coins will never be found this way, but the newer and more popular coins worth money can be found by smart inviduals. If you have a change jar in your home, put all your change in there and go through it every week or month to check for rare or valuable coins. This is an easy way to keep track of all the coins that come through your possession.

You may be able to make more money this way than you might expect. For example, a 1982 "no P" dime may be worth $100 or more. These dimes were minted without the P mint mark just 30 years ago, so it is likely that there are still some in circulation. The 1955 Double Die penny is even more valuable. This coin could make you $300 all the way up to $25000!

Most people have no idea how many of these valuable coins are still in circulation today. If you are spending your change without going through it first to check its true value, you could be losing out. Start saving and checking all of your change and you might be surprised and what you find.
