What Types of Short Term Car Insurance Exist?

By Leigh Jackson

Depending in the company that you choose to insure you, you can purchase liability only or full coverage short term insurance. If you are considering buying coverage for a large vehicle, such as a moving truck, the company might already offer coverage that can be purchased through the company. There are limitations to this coverage, however.

If a rental company does not offer any type of insurance on a vehicle, it is best for you to purchase the full coverage short term insurance option from an outside insurance company before renting to keep you safe in case of an accident. Full coverage insurance will cover damages to the rental vehicle and the people inside as well as any damage to any vehicle, person, or object that you hit.

Most rental companies offer a basic coverage option that only covers you when damage is caused to their vehicle by another vehicle or person. You are not covered for damage that you inflict to another person or vehicle. In order to be fully covered, you must purchase additional liability insurance.

Short term insurance coverage can cover a driver from anywhere from one day to six months, depending on the company you choose.

Even if you don't want to add short term coverage to your existing policy, you can still be protected by this type of insurance. For example, a teenage driver coming home from college might need temporary insurance to drive your car around while they are home. If they are not on your policy but they drive your car, you will be responsible for paying the damages. Short term insurance for the time they will be home is a great option to keep you safe.

Short term insurance keeps your existing discounts and rates safe on your long term policy if another driver has an accident when driving your car.

The best way to find the right short term car insurance is to shop around and compare companies. There are also a few internet sites that allow you to compare the rate of multiple companies at once.

Important factors to consider when comparing a policy are time the policy is valid, coverage amount offered and what the policy will pay if you file a claim.

Short term insurance is often overlooked, but it can be extremely useful and cost effective for protecting you and your finances during a road trip or move.
